twittorial: for everyone with half a brain

As I stood in front of the pool of journalists and fellow PR practitioners, I recalled thinking to myself, “Oh Pat, what the fuck did you get yourself into, this time?” The committee of the Singapore Press Club had invited me to conduct an introductory session on Twitter, and while I was truly honoured, I was also shitting in my pants. I don’t think I’ve felt this nervous since that time when I was forced to act as some old lady in a play during Literature class (no, I do not remember which play it was).

Contrary to belief, I hate Public Speaking and it is no doubt my biggest weakness. Which I’d imagine to be a shame given my choice of career. I’m terrible at storytelling. I’m the sort who’d make any kid fall asleep from boredom by the second paragraph of Snow White and the 7 Dwarves. Some PR practitioners tell stories as though they were reciting Shakespeare, oh with such prose and precision, and I can’t even master a children story book. Which is precisely why I agreed to do the presentation in the first place. God knows I need to battle my demons heads on.

It was my privilege sharing my little bits of knowledge that day at the forum. It was an honour having the Editor-in-Chief of The Straits Times, Patrick Daniel, present, and to have the audience  jot notes down as I rattled on. As much as I was uncomfortable being referred as a Twitter veteran (my readers will know I don’t self-proclaim anything), I’m glad I got the chance to present my Twittorial.
