party time for #sgelections

By • May 2nd, 2011 • Category: The Digital Strategist

Come May 7 2011, some 2.5 million Singaporeans of a total population of 5 million will vote for the political party they believe in. In my near 3 decades of being a Singaporean, I have never seen an atmosphere as heated up as this. For my foreign readers, you must understand that we Singaporeans are generally an apathetic bunch of nonchalant beings. When even your savings are taken care of by the Government, its tough to feel a sense of ownership over this little island.

The time has changed for this young nation. With the third generation of Singaporeans leading the elections since the country’s independence, we are witnessing a pace of social liberalization like no other. While I cannot speak for the rest of my fellow people, my once-dormant sense of patriotism has been heightened by ten fold. I’m glad for my right to vote, and damn fucking right I will.

With a society where traditional media are mostly part of the same family, with a society where its people are largely passive repressive, I thank Tim Berners-Lee for inventing the Internet, Evan Williams and Meg Hourihan (Pyra Labs) for popularizing blogging with Blogger.com, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim of YouTube, and Mark Zuckerberg for Facebook.

And thank you Tribal DDB and Brandtology, for this sexy data visualization of the buzz on Singapore Elections. Now if only the words tagged to each political party could be further broken down into further data.
