I should sue my friend Jo, for nearly killing me this evening with this. IMDb, for some reason, decided to retain the Mandarin name of the film, Red Cliff, ignorantly in hanyu pinyin without the essential tone marks. Tone marks play an imperative part in hanyu pinyin and aid one in correct pronunciation of Mandarin syllables. Miss them out, and you’d sound like… well, me actually.
I don’t imagine John Woo being too pleased of his major Chinese epic film being called a vagina in Hokkien (one of the most spoken dialects amongst the Chinese).
The potential conversations for the movie in Taiwan (Hokkien loving country, those people) are absolutely Oscar® worthy, don’t you think?
