your real color shines through

The brand needs no introduction. But perhaps I should also mention how, in addition to giving you that much-needed kick up the brain on a Friday night, Absolut Vodka is also widely recognised as one of the first (and rare still) global brands to embrace the lesbian and gay rights movements, with supportive relations to the LGBT community dating back to the early eighties. Today, as the famous rainbow flag, the overarching symbol of the LGBT movement first designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978, turns thirty years of age, Absolut joins the celebrations with a dedicated initiative - Absolut Colors.

Nina Gillsvik, International Brand Director of the brand explains the initiative best.

ABSOLUT COLORS builds on our history as a brand that has always encouraged people to be who they are.

Almost thirty years ago, when our company decided to do our bit in supporting the rights of the individual, we were considered bold. Today we can look back on those days and that decision with pride. For us, ABSOLUT COLORS is a natural way to continue to inspire people to let their true colors shine and be proud of who they are.

Considering the unpleasantness I have encountered this week as a result of my sexuality, I must say learning of this initiative from Absolut Vodka was comforting.

I am open about my sexuality, and admittedly, obvious at times when I’m in my letswearthedrmartens mode. Still, I’m not obsessively loud about it. I don’t announce my sexuality by the second sentence of any conversation, not even at a gay party, for it is as irrelevant as my cup size. Sounds a little odd to go, Hi, I’m Pat and I’m a borderline Cup C, doesn’t it? Likewise, my sexuality defines me not as a person, although yes, I do recognise there is always going to be a handful of narrow-minded perverts who see not beyond, or above for that matter, the bra. The pun, by the way, was not intended.

I have been blessed with family, friends, conservative married-with-3-kids colleagues and even unforgiving clients, who are broad-minded enough to judge me beyond my sexuality. If I fuck up as a daughter, it is not because I’m gay (mum doesn’t approve procreation, thank god). If I fuck up as a friend and I bailed out, it is not because I’m gay. And if I didn’t manage to crack the damn creative brief, it is certainly not because I’m gay. I’m grateful they noticed my real colour. And it isn’t always pink.

Perhaps I have been a little too comfortable with the treatment I’ve received on my sexuality. Sometimes, one need a reality check on the existence of ignorance and homophobes and I got mine earlier this week. I’m too gay for a brand? I offer no argument - my family, friends, colleagues and clients are my validation. I’m sorry you’re colour blind. I’m actually sorrier I am such a seasoned Ad Girl, I understand the reason why.
