the dirt with Irene Ang
By Pat Law • Mar 28th, 2009 • Category: The DirtWhen Irene and I first met, I thought she could’ve given Dolly Parton a run for her money if not for her distinctively Singaporean accent.
Surely no celebrity could be this friendly, I recalled thinking, while sipping my glass of whisky quietly. After all, an appointment wasn’t scheduled, and I was interrupting her evening rudely on the premise of wanting to talk about her pussy.
Her beloved cat named Toast, that is.
I had a cat food brand to market, and pathetic kibbles for budget. Irene was of perfect relevance to my target audience – ambitious, intelligent, single woman and cat owner with a stellar resume that will make the underpaid magna cum laude Harvard graduate weep. I couldn’t afford to endorse her surely, but I thought I might have a shot with her cat. I did. My client gained a celebrity cat for a customer for a year. Me? I gained a sister like no other.
Over the years, I’ve learned how Irene has become a victim of her own honesty. The preconceived judgement I had of her being pretentious was born out of my own cynicism. Scary, isn’t it? If someone doesn’t behave in a certain way you expect her to, you assume she’s faking it. In today’s decaying society, where everyone has a hidden agenda, it is refreshing to experience the truthfulness Irene chooses to adapt. Now that I’m in Public Relations, I thirst for the refreshment even more.
It is my greatest honour to present to you, Irene’s FIRST EVER blog interview on blankanvas. But before that, at risk of having her disown me, let me share a little bit more about Irene you might not know:
• SHE MOTIVATES: Besides being the CEO of Fly Entertainment, Actress, Comedian, Host and mother to many, Irene is also involved in motivational talks. Her clients include the Singapore Management University, Fujitsu Asia, Hewlett Packard, the Singapore Girls’ Home, Enyouth Singapore, National Library Board, MediaCorp Radio, MediaCorp Studios, Singapore Council Of Women’s Organisation (SCWO) and Raffles Design Institute.
• WOMEN RESPECT HER: Irene was the opening speaker of the Singapore Women’s Congress 2005, as well as a panel speaker for the same congress back in 2004, having also given speeches in the World Speaker’s Summit.
• SHE POKES VERY WELL: Irene was an ex-Singapore fencer who won a SEA Games silver medal in 1991. Really.
• SHE WILL PRAY FOR YOU: If I can count the number of times she praises God.
• A STUDENT FOR LIFE: For someone who, a couple of years ago, tells me excitedly that she “learnt to create a folder on her computer” to a mobile warrior Twittering away and checking her Google alerts on her BlackBerry now, I think she’s come a long way. Before I know it, she’d be telling me she’s writing plugins for WordPress.
Alright people, here’s the long-awaited interview. And yes, that is her handwriting. Double click on the image or click here to view a bigger image.

I’m impressed with Irene for embracing social media like that. What’s more, this interview shows her openness to connect with the people who matter…….. her fans. Now I know her beyond being Mrs Chu Kang!
Nice interview. I like the pen and paper presentation of the interview. It has both the sincere and innovative touch.
Thank you for this Pat! And thank you Irene for the answers!
Irene Ang has definitely been an incredible figure in our local entertainment industry. I happen to think she’s one of the most talented comedienne around.
BTW, I met Esther and Sam sometime last week when I went to pass a cheque to Esther. Fly gals are awesome!
Nice … though I had some difficulty reading the interview.. haha
First, thank you Pat for uploading this…
Next, WAH, sure or not? Auntie Rosie was an ex-SEA Games FENCER?!
After reading this interview I think I am starting to ‘worship’ Auntie Rosie (like how I ‘worship’ Ellen DeGeneres… Ooo.. so scary lah~)
Finally, do watch PCK Sdn Bhd, it’s good excercise for your lungs. LOL~
Irene’s a gem. She has been touched by God’s love, lives out her life mantras sincerely, no airs about what she has achieved & v down to earth. The quote “It is not what we get. But who we become, what we contribute, that gives meaning to our lives” . I see that in Irene . She took all her life “challenges” , journeyed through them, turned them around, and became who she is today. A successful woman who always give glory to her living God. That is who Irene is. Never glory in her achievements, always praising God.
May God continually bless, protect and grant Irene the wisdom in the many years to come. Well Done Irene ! We are all proud of you ! To God be the Glory!
