the forest of knowledge

Lununganga shelves. A mouthful of a name I realise, but definitely worth swallowing as the Forest does with her trees. To replicate the mood of overpopulation felt whilst working in Sri Lanka, London-based duo from WOKmedia, Julie Mathias and Wolfgang Kaeppner, illustrate with sturdy tree branches planted into your wall, dressed in purity.

Drawing inspiration from partially submerged trees one would find with a forgotten lake, these shelves emerge subtlety from your wall, holding your collection of books which otherwise stay lonely and neglected against that boring IKEA book shelf of yours.

WOKmedia was born in 2004, by the hands of Julie Mathias and Wolfgang Kaeppner who are based in London with a production studio in Shanghai. Cheaper labour, I suppose. Their works have been graced national and international group shows and solo installations at the Design Museum London, the British Council’s lighting exhibition, the British Council and Paul Smith for the Milan Furniture Fair, “Well Done” in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei, My World” Part of the Lisbon Biennale “Experimenta”, just to name a few.
Other works have been exhibited in Sheffield, Singapore (really?), Amsterdam, Sydney and Melbourne, Vilnius, Oslo, Ljubljana, Miami, Athens and Shanghai.
Check them out sometime.
