Breakfast with Danny

A peaceful Sunday it was, complimented with warmth poured down like sweet honey from the skies. I found myself at the five foot way of Kay Ngee Tan Architects Gallery, having breakfast with one of the most dynamic and talented cultural figures Asia has ever seen – Danny Yung.

A renowned experimental stage director and founder of well-respected art association, Zuni Icosahedron, Danny is currently in town for his exhibition, Tian Tian Xiang Shang, at the gallery. By a sheer stroke of luck, I was sent by my editor to interview Danny for an upcoming article.

I know I will struggle with my article, for Danny took me on a psychological and philosophical journey like no other dialogue my mind or soul has ever consumed. An interview that ignored the pre-set list of questions, I found myself engaged in a dialogue that defied everything I knew about communication. That morning, I was humbled by his magnitude of endless knowledge. I was silenced by his multi-dimensional intelligence. I shall struggle with my article, for I must ensure my words serve him the justice he deserves.

In Tian Tian Xiang Shang, Danny questions comic. Can comic serve as a platform for collective thinking and collective creativity? Can comic generate creativity? Using the 9-frame, 4-frame and 3-frame comic, Danny redefines and educates what you think you know about direction, position, space, narrative framework and communication structure. The science engineered from these art pieces will stun the Intelligent and confuse the Foolish.

There is a special participating in this exhibition by nine famous Hong Kong personalities from the arts and cultural scene with their 9-square comics’ contributions.

They include:

1. Vivienne Tam - International Renowned Feminine Fashion Designer
2. Tsui Hark - Film Director/ Producer (yes, that Tsui Hark)
3. Alice Mak - Co-developed the Mcdull story series and publication “Yellow Bus”
4. Kan Tai Keung - Design/Painter and Dean and Guest Professor
5. Douglas Young - AA Trained Architect and Co-founder of GOD
6. Siuhak - Designer, Lecturer and Co-founder of Comic Group “Springrolllll”
7. Stanley Wong Ping-pui - better known as anothermountainman - Artist and Graphic Designer
8. Craig Au Yeung - Cross-media Artist
9. Choi Yan Chi - Assistant Professor of Academy of Visual Arts at Hong Hong Baptist University

I recommend for all conceptually able beings to check this exhibition out. Details as follow.

  1. I hate to make light of it, but smart, artistic, interesting, compassionate and pretty cute too. Wow, I could be in lurve!

I know Danny’s done some amazing and heavy-duty stuff in HK to support, encourage and nurture creative expression and freedom there and I suspect groundwork that he helped to lay many years ago is blossoming now.

Great to have him in Singapore. Anything we can bribe him with to stay?

    =) Marc

  2. Marc,

Yeah, Danny is one charming guy. I can understand why you’d be in love. ;)

I’ll drop him a note to let you know that you’d like him to stay. But I can’t think of any reason for anyone as brilliant as him wanting to stay here. Can you?

Say something.
