lace up. save lives.

3,800 men, women and children die from AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa every day.

It costs around 40 cents a day to buy the two crucial pills these dying souls need to stay alive.

You can afford to save a life or two. Or maybe more.

Nike and (RED)™ unite to leverage the power of sport to fight HIV and AIDS in Africa. This unique partnership delivers a two-pronged approach to fight HIV and AIDS in Africa by delivering funds to support programs that offer education and medication on the ground and will harness the power of sport to engage youth around the world in the fight against AIDS in Africa.

Some of the world’s leading footballers have placed their best foot forward specially for the partnership. They include: Didier Drogba (Chelsea), Joe Cole (Chelsea),  Andrei Arshavin (Arsenal), Marco Materazzi (Inter Milan), Denilson (Arsenal), Lucas Neill (Everton), Clint Dempsey (Fulham) and Seol Ki-Hyeon (Fulham).

The Nike and (RED) concept is a simple one that invites everyone who cares to Lace Up. Save Lives. by purchasing a pair of (NIKE)RED laces.

Here’s how you can help contribute to this worthy cause:

  1. You purchase (NIKE)RED laces at Nike Singapore, Wisma Atria, or any Nike-only stores from today onwards, at SGD7.00 per pair
  2. Each pair comes in 3 lengths for different football boots and your regular kicks too
  3. Nike contribute 100% of the profits from the sale to the Global Fund and to football-based programs that help fight AIDS in Africa
  4. Funds are received by programs like Grassroots Soccer, which uses football as a framework to teach youths how to avoid contracting HIV/AIDS
  5. Funds are also contributed to The Global Fund to fund HIV/AIDS programs that support the purchase of lifesaving Antiretroviral (ARV) medication, training of medical staff, HIV testing and treatment to help prevent the transmission of the virus from pregnant mothers to their babies
  6. Life-saving knowledge is received by the next generation in Africa

To show my support for the cause, I’m giving away 5 pairs of these (NIKE)RED laces to the first 5 blankettes who leave a comment on this blog post. All I ask is for you to help promote this cause on Twitter with this tweet:

Fight AIDS through football. http://bit.ly/6uTSMG #laceupsaveslives #red

Help us save lives today. Because you’re lucky enough to be in a situation where you can.

  5. I think that the (RED) program is a wonderful charity organization and I have purchased necklaces, shirts, everything available basically. Such a noble cause! Keep up the good work!

  6. I’m in! I tweeted and facebooked. Now I just need a pair of laces! Right on

  7. Good on you for doing this Pat! Love to help!

  8. Yo Pat. Hann Sern from the Swoosh here. Thanks for the support!

  9. I’m in Uganda now and reading this! Just last saturday we had tea at Dr Anne Merriman’s house and talked about her works. IT’s really amazing stuff!
I’m only back in Singapore on the 11th, really hope these are still available! How much is a box of laces?
    Cheers!!

  10. Thanks for your kind words guys. Yeah, lets all help and fight AIDS together.

  11. Hey Calisa,

Wow, I’ve never had a flutist on my blog before. Welcome. Yup, grab a pair of (NIKE)RED laces from your nearest Nike store in San Francisco. Let’s do our bit, wherever we are.

  12. Harlow Hann Sern,

Always happy to help my Swoosh family! :)

  13. Wow Jonathan, no shit. How’s Uganda looking? The (NIKE)RED laces are available at Nike Wisma, and all Nike-only stores across the island. Each pair (in a box) cost SGD7.00.

  14. Hi Pat!

I’ve managed to call Wisma outlet and reserved 10 boxes this morning (Uganda time)!! I’m so excited to pick them up and changed them into my AF1s!! I hope there’ll be some more left when I get home, cos I’m getting more people wanting it as I told them about this!!

Uganda is still not looking that good although they’ve progress a lot for the last 5 years. Many countries in Africa are still in bad shape even with the help from other more well-to-do countries, NGOs, etc etc…

Well… There are plenty of stories and truths to be told here, and I’m glad I travelled this far to know more and have better knowledge of what’s going on in here… I would love to tell more of what I’ve encountered here in Uganda for the past 10 days, but there’s really so so so much to say… :-)

Once again thank you for sharing this! Let’s paint the town red with this laces!

  15. Wow Jonathon, you're amazing. Yes, let's paint this town red with them laces on our kicks!
