a social network done right
By Pat Law • Mar 7th, 2009 • Category: Features, The Digital StrategistHere’s my bold prediction about Facebook – a couple of years from now, we will all abandon it like we have with boybands. I don’t know about you, but since the first superpoke from an annoying ex-classmate, Facebook has always been a bit like Microsoft to me. I don’t fancy it as much as I should, but yet, I use it anyway. Ah, the power of many.
Facebook’s change in terms of service didn’t surprise me actually. What do you expect from a 25-year-old CEO? Maturity? Experience? Cut that kid some slack. After all, he’s the one with a database bigger than the entire population of Japan.

You can imagine my joy when I discovered Virb, on Adib’s blog. Virb, a Media Temple venture, is:
A community and a place for you to contribute the stuff that interests you. Virb is your social network, your photography portfolio and your band’s website. Virb is the collection of all that you share online, from what you find to what you create. What you do with Virb is completely up to you, so make yourself at home and show the world what makes you, you.
Adib has 5 brilliant reasons why he loves Virb and I have just one – it is Elitism for the Cool. No room for superpoking (WTF) or sending virtual teddy bears (WTF WTF) here. PLUS, have you seen the Virb team? Sometimes, not looking like that geek who has newfound power overnight after being bullied for most of his life helps. First Beacon, then the change of TOS. What’s next?

Join me on Virb today. That is, of course, if you’re not the same one superpoking me and sending me virtual teddy tears.

Great find, thanks. I share your view on Facebook.
There is nothing wrong with receiving virtual teddy bears, especially if they be by hawt young things … but then again, I never do receive anything besides superpokes from blokes … hhhmm … DOWN WITH FB!
heh.
I love their upfront approach – their emails come from Virb Robot. There’s bonus points available for making honesty cool.
I was so over Facebook in like 2 weeks! The fact they were a “Walled Garden” put me of completely. I’ll have to say though that their recruitment model is a huge success and a big rolling snow ball that feeds itself. ie more people on board the more people it pulls.
However as the rest of the web world gets easier to manage or get into, facebook will soon disappear, when site like twitter take over their life stream, posterous their links and photos, and finally blogs their homepage. The fishes are nibbling at the edges. If you ask me, mark should have exited when the valuation was up.
Will I join Virb? Why? I did say that when blogs get easier to setup, that will be your hub. More on Tuesday!
Mr Evil, no wonder you not on FB that much ar!
