As a digital strategist by day, I thank God for the existence of Xiaxue. Perhaps vulgar and suicidal even for me to say so, but I reckon the local social media realm will not be as it is today, if not for her existence. The local social media realm is my marketplace. Xiaxue is my marketplace benchmark. My wagyu cow if you may. Ridiculously expensive. Not necessarily appropriate. But people know of it, and that makes beef in general, desirable.
The humidity trickled down the back, the sun kissing the five-foot-way of the shophouse, the skies spilled a clumsy mash of clouds. Beneath the white walls of the shophouse legendary lensman Steve McCurry resided. He was engaged in a critique session with one of his students from his master class. Little did he realise the next person he was to evaluate was himself.
The good kids from BooksActually, Karen and Kenny, have just grown bigger, with their second store, Polymath & Crust, which specializes in non-fiction; both nature and science. Between running two bookstores and managing a crazy cat (Hi Cake, how are you? No my finger isn’t food.), the kids managed to find time to get dirty on blankanvas.
Many of today’s top creative dogs in the Advertising industry, including Tay Guan Hin and Curt Detweiler, have worked under Linda Locke to a certain degree. Her intimidating, no-nonsense leadership led many to one single conclusion: Linda Locke is the second coming of Lady Macbeth – an assessment I’m forced to experience within minutes.
Over the years, I’ve learned how Irene has become a victim of her own honesty. The preconceived judgement I had of her being pretentious was born out of my own cynicism. In today’s decaying society, where everyone has a hidden agenda, it is refreshing to experience the truthfulness Irene chooses to adapt.
